Why we're doing it
As someone living with stage 4 breast cancer. Research into treating advanced cancer is what gives women like me more time, and hope.
Hākinakina is my legacy. Giving back through it this month is the most meaningful thing I can do with it.
Where the money goes
The Malaghan Institute is an independent research institute in Wellington. They're taking a revolutionary approach to fighting cancer through CAR T-cell therapy, and working to make it accessible and affordable for all New Zealanders who need it.
What CAR T-cell therapy is
CAR T-cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy) is a one-off treatment. It takes a patient's own immune cells, called T-cells, and reprograms them in the lab to find and attack cancer cells. The modified cells are then returned to the patient, where they get to work destroying the cancer.
It has the potential to transform cancer treatment. My hope is that one day it will be available for women like me, living with advanced breast cancer.
